True Blood Series 1 : Review

8 07 2009

Plot : The series follows Sookie Stackhouse, a young girl who
can read people’s minds, and how her life is turned upside down when a Vampire, walks into her place of employment.

Review : I had heard only a little about this, mostly it was interesting and was about vampires so I decided to give this a shot.

This is an interesting show and yes it is about vampires, but 50% of the show is story and the other 50% is about sex and nudity…its like a TV porn vampire series and that kinda sums it up very well. Granted there is nothing with including sex or nudity scenes, but it felt like they put them in there to try and get the viewers and not really focus on getting a good story.

Overall not a very enjoyable series, and I wont be watching season 2.

Serenity (2005) – Review

30 06 2009

Plot : The crew of the ship Serenity tries to evade an assassin sent to recapture one of their number who is telepathic

Review : I have reviewed this when I first saw it in the cinema, and when I first watched it on DVD..but I recently watched it again and thought I would do another review so will keep this short.

*Spoilers ahead*

I still really enjoyed this film, it had good jokes, good action scenes and the cast were as good as they were on Firefly. I was still shocked to see that a few main characters were killed off, as they were ones you loved from the TV series.

Overall its a great movie, and you dont need to have seen Firefly to enjoy it (it helps). I hope either another series of Firefly will be created, or a sequel to Serenity.

AppleTV 2.4 Update – Review

29 06 2009

So nearly one year on and I am still loving my AppleTV. The main reason I got it was to get Diggnation and other podcasts to play on my TV in HD, but I have now started to use more of its features i.e. Renting movies, flickr etc

This 2.4 update, I find is a little more responsive, gestures on the remote app and the cover art images download a lot faster.

With this recent update I decided I would try and sync my iPhone 3GS, and use the remote app and see what its like. One word “Amazing”, its a lot more responsive and I find it 100% better to use than the remote that comes with the product.

Overall a really nice update and look forward to many more.

Blood : The Last Vampire (2009) – Review

29 06 2009

Plot : A vampire named Saya, who is part of covert government agency that
hunts and destroys demons in a post-WWII Japan, is inserted in a
military school to discover which one of her classmates is a demon is
disguise.

Review : I had seen the trailer and thought this looks really good….I was wrong.

I thought the film could have been a lot better, it had some really good parts but they didn’t last long or get expanded and the weaker parts took over. They had an interesting take on Vampires, and had some good special FX but that really didn’t help the film or story.

I feel that if they didn’t Americanize it, the film could have probably been 100% better…some of the fighting scenes were good, and the cinematography but thats about it.

Overall very disappointed, has a few nice key scenes but mostly not a great film.

My Rating : 5 out of 10

It’s a Boy Girl Thing (2006) – Review

22 06 2009

Plot : Sworn enemies find themselves in each other’s bodies, and use this to ruin each other’s lives.

Review : As soon as the first 30mins was over, you know how the film is going to end but that didnt stop me from watching it to the end.

Granted the storyline is not the best, but it was easy to watch and had a few laughs. The film is similar to “Freaky Friday” with the whole body swap plot, but this time is between two neighbors that grew up and hated each other. The way they interact with each other, and find out how each other live was interesting.

I have to admit I did enjoy watching this, I think probably due to it being a complete no brainer to watch and some of the jokes were actually very funny.

Overall it was ok, not the best of films and I dont know if its one I would recommend to my friends.

Arahan (2004) – DVD Review

22 06 2009

Plot : Sang-hwan became a cop out of his naive desire to bring justice to
those who take unfair advantage of their strengths. But the tough
reality is that even local gangsters can beat him up! One day, he
suddenly encounters a group of strangers who proclaim “You are destined
to become Maruchi (enlightened male master)! We will teach you how to
shoot ch’i energy from your palms too. Really!” They are known as the
Seven Masters and thus Sang-hwan is paired with his partner-to-be,
Eui-jin, who is destined to become Arachi (enlightened female master).

Review : I ordered this film from Korea when it came out, and till this day I think I got a copy rather than the legal DVD so I have watched it a few times but always wanted to get the real thing. For my birthday a friend got this on DVD for me, so I recently watched it and here is what I thought.

This is a great film you can sit down and enjoy many times, the acting, comedy and special FX are all very well done. Sang-hwan is such a funny cop, he is just so pathetic you cant help but love the character and espeshally when he tried is best to do the the martial arts.

Even though I have seen this a few times, I still laughed at Sang-hwan and all the jokes throughout the film. If you havent seen it give it a shot. The martial arts are really great, and the restuarant scene is the best in the film.

Overall this is one film I would recomened to a lot of Asian Film lovers, its just an all round good film and easy to watch.

The Host (Book) – Review

16 06 2009

Author : Stephenie Meyer

Plot : Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a
species that takes over the minds of their human hosts while leaving
their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed. Wanderer, the
invading ’soul’ who has been given Melanie’s body, knew about the
challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the
too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn’t
expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession
of her mind.

Review : I really enjoyed the Twilight books, and was really looking forward to reading this. When I started to read this I didn’t get into the style of writing, the story and was a little put off by that as I was taken in very fast with Twilight.

I have had this book for a while, and most of the time it just sat next to me and I couldn’t be bothered reading it due to not getting into the story, characters and pace of the book. I managed to read up to 50% and it just sat there like that for a few weeks.

If you asked me what I thought of it then, I would have said not really a good read, very slow to get into the characters and I wasn’t sure if I would actually finish it.

So this week I decided that I will finish it and see how it ends, so I read a few chapters a night and this is my thoughts on it now.

Now that I have read a good chunk each night and finished it, its actually not as bad as I originally thought. I did get into the characters, maybe not as much as I did with the Twilight characters but I did get into the main ones.

I am glad I did finish it as I would read its sequel if there was one, as it was an interesting story and ending not as good as Twilight but still good.

Overall I feel this is a book you need to read on a daily basis, and not put it down for a while or you will not pick it up. Due to the story and the details, you need to keep reading it to get into the storyline and pace. I think if I did that to start with I would have probably finished it a while ago.

LG KU990 Viewty – Final Review

15 06 2009

Specifications : http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_ku990_viewty-2070.php

Review : So I have had this mobile now for 18 months, when I got it the phone was only out a few weeks.

Overall its been a good phone, it does what its meant to do but there have been issues with it and I also know a few folk who have the same phone and have had the same issues.

The first issue is the touch screen, its not the best and sometimes you need to press on the screen a few times for it to register the action.

The second issue is that more recently the system has started to hang, and the only way to fix this is to remove the battery and do a hard reboot.

These 2 issues above, have also been reported by 3 friends who have the same phone. One other friend has not had these issues, but finds the battery lift to be very poor…I cant comment as I can leave it for a week and then I need to charge it.

That is the only two issues I have had with this phone, apart from that its great but now those 2 issues above are occurring more and more. I know LG released a second version of this phone, so I hope they fixed these issues.

My contract runs out next Tuesday (23rd June), so I will be moving to the new iPhone 3GS so expect a little review on that.

Overall its a good phone that does what its meant to do, the camera is very nice but needs perfect light conditions.

Cursed (2005) – Review

15 06 2009

Plot : A werewolf loose in Los Angeles changes the lives of three young adults, who, after being mauled by the beast, learn they must kill their attacker if they hope to change their fate to avoid becoming werewolves too.

Review : I never saw this in the cinema, so when I spotted it was on TV I decided to give it a watch.

I actually enjoyed this movie, granted it was a little cheesy at parts and the acting could have been a little better but it was an enjoyable film. You could tell Wes directed it, as it had a similar feel to the Scream movies.

The storyline was basic, the soundtrack was very interesting and worked very well. The special effects were actually very good, there was just 2 scenes where you thought “thats a mask”.

Overall if you like easy to watch horror films, and just feel like watching a no brainer movie then this will be for you. It has good moments, a few laughs, and its entertaining…plus Christina Ricci is very cute.

My Rating : 6 out of 10

Zoolander (2001) – Review

11 06 2009

Plot : At the end of his career, a clueless fashion model is brainwashed to kill the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Review : Most of the people I have talked to said, that its a must see as its just so funny so when I spotted it on TV I decided to give it a shot.

The film is loaded with special guest appearences, and lots of product placement so you instantly know it was a low budget film getting help with all the different products.

It has a very silly plot, and the acting and jokes are very crap. Overall a massive waste of my time, I didnt laugh once, the film was just too weird and too silly. I really dont know what people can like about this film…I guess I must have missed “it”.
