Twilight (Book) – Review

29 11 2008

Plot : When 17 year old Isabella Swan moves to Forks, Washington to live with her father she expects that her new life will be as dull as the town. But in spite of her awkward manner and low expectations, she finds that her new classmates are drawn to this pale, dark-haired new girl in town. But not, it seems, the Cullen family. These five adopted brothers and sisters obviously prefer their own company and will make no exception for Bella. Bella is convinced that Edward Cullen in particular hates her, but she feels a strange attraction to him, although his hostility makes her feel almost physically ill. He seems determined to push her away ? until, that is, he saves her life from an out of control car. Bella will soon discover that there is a very good reason for Edward’s coldness. He, and his family, are vampires ? and he knows how dangerous it is for others to get too close.

Review : I heard about this book last year, people saying that if you liked Buffy you would like this. I then managed to get a hold of the audio book, and started listening to it but I couldnt get into it and thought it might be one that you need to read.

I purchased the book before going to Florence, and took it with me and read a little each night. To be honest its nothing like Buffy, the only things that are similar are it contains a high school, and that a vampire falls in love with a human girl.

I found this book very easy to read, and enjoyed the story very much. You were drawn into the world, as the characters were easy to understand and relate to. The plot was ok, little thin but I heard that the sequels are a lot better and far more enjoyable.

As most know I don’t tend to read much, but I did enjoy this and have ordered “New Moon” its sequel. I would like to see the film when it comes out, and I have managed to listen to the films soundtrack which is also very good.

Flock 2.0 – Internet Browser Review

14 11 2008

Flock The Social Internet Browserwww.flock.com

I have been using from since version 1.0 on Linux, under my Ubuntu operating system. I really like the fact that it has a really nice facebook sidebar, built in RSS feed reader and other small cool features.

It wasn’t until I started using Flock that I started to do more things, for example I created a wordpress blog and started blogging (http://kjhm.wordpress.com/) I also created a Flickr account and started to use the built in uploader to upload photos.

Flock 2.0 has now been released and here are my thoughts, to start with version 2 isnt really a full release for me as it feels more like a point something update. Granted they have added a few more small features like MySpace sidebar, and its based on Firefox 3 (yes there are a few more things added but these are the ones that stand out for me).

I will be moving over to Mac in March 2009, and I am starting to think that I might abandon Flock as its starting to feel a little slow for me now. Granted I like the whole socialness at my fingertips, but I can get Facebook, Flickr and Twitter desklets on the Mac to do the same….hmmm

Overall if your a social beaver then then I recomend you download this, I am sure just like me once you start using it you will start to try new social things.

AVPR: Aliens vs Predator : Requiem (2007) – Review

12 11 2008

Plot – Warring alien and predator races descend on a small town, where unsuspecting residents must band together for any chance of survival.

Review – I thought the first AVP movie was ok, it didnt have the same suspense that the other alien films had which is what made them soo good. It felt also very “lets just show these guys fighting”, and also it didnt have the best of actors. Even with these flaws i still went out and got it on DVD, as I liked to see these guys on screen.

I recently got AVP2 cheap on DVD, I missed this in the cinema and just like the first I heard it wasnt great. The film for me is a blend of Aliens, Predator, Predator 2 and Freddy vs Jason…which is why its just an ok film. It is a lot better than the first but again, it still doesnt have the suspense and creepy feelings that made these original films classics.

Overall its ok, it could have been a lot better and the ending..eh..ok…

Jack Daniels Set at ABC – 11th November 2008

12 11 2008

Event : JD SET – ABC 2 (Jack Daniels Event filmed for Channel Four… With Art Brut and Rosie and the Goldbug)

Act Going To See :
Maeve OBoyle (Warm Up Act)

I managed to get two free guest passes thanks to Linn Records, as they had there new act Maeve playing at the ABC. Everyone was given a free voucher for a free Jack Daniels, which was cool and it was nice lol.

This night was going to be all new acts to me, which I love as I am always up for trying new bands to find more music to love.

Before I came I visited her MySpace to check out her style, and found her to be very good.

Maeve came on stage and started, she sounded very like Amy McDonald but with a better and stronger voice. She played for about 20 to 25mins, and I really liked her style and music so much that I would probably purchase her album. Unfortunately since she was the warm up act, a lot of folk continued to talk through her, which am sure is a little off putting to the act but it didnt bother me as I was very close to the stage.

The next act that came on was Rosie and the Goldbug, this band consisted of female lead singer and keyboard, female on the drums and a guy on the guitar. For me they sounded similar to the Soho Dolls, but with a more punk influence. I think over time this band would grow on me, so I will probably keep an eye out for them.

Once they were finished the last act of the night came one, Art Brut. Art’s style is like The Streets, but with very heavy punk rock not really my thing. He worked the crowed well, but it didnt really grab me.

Overall the night was very good and very entertaining, and I even meet a friend who I had not seen since 6th year of High School.

New Years Resolutions – 2008

11 11 2008

A friend asked me recently if I had started to think about my 2009 resolutions, and to be honest I hadn’t but it did get me thinking about this years and if I achieved them or not.

First on this years list was to loose weight, since I was at College to present I have been slowly trying to loose weight to go back to the weight I used to be. At College I went up to 15/16 stone, and I didn’t like it. I managed to get down to a good weight, and this year I wanted to finish and loose 1 more stone to get back to the 11 and a half / 12 stone I used to be. So far I am on track which is great just under half a stone to go, and this is just due to eating better and taking less coke and chocolate and burgers. I think this will be achieved by the end of 2008.

Second was to start to eat healthier, so this kinda falls in to point 1. Granted I still wont eat a salad, but I have started to eat more lettuce, tomatoes etc but thats on stuff or with stuff lol. So this one has been achieved.

And last one was to get out more. Once I got tinnitus that put me off going out to clubs and gigs, like i used to as i didn’t want it to get worse as i read it could get so loud that it would be hard to hear people over it. This year I have been out more and only using earplugs when needed (though only used once so far), I have been out with friends at clubs and also gigs. This will continue from now on, so another one achieved.

So that just leaves 2009’s…not really thought about them so this list could change

1. Read more – I have never read enough and that’s why my English isn’t great, so this will change I would like to aim for at lease one book a month.

2. Driving Lessons & Test – Even though I probably wont get a car due to cost and petrol (for now), having a driving license would be good.

3. Learn another language – Since Italy is a home from home, I will start to learn Italian.

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (2008) – Review

11 11 2008

Plot – Dr. Horrible, an aspiring supervillain with his own video blog, is attempting to join the prestigious Evil League of Evil (led by the legendary “thoroughbred of sin”, Bad Horse), but his plans are usually foiled by the egotistical superhero Captain Hammer. Horrible’s life is thrown for a loop when he falls in love with Penny, a beautiful and optimistic advocate for the homeless he meets at the laundromat, a situation which complicates itself even further when Penny begins dating the boorish, oafish Hammer after he apparently saves her life. Faced with the task of impressing the League, can Horrible overcome his own incompetence to ruin the day, kill the hero, and still get the girl?

Review – This is a 3 part series, running at about 15mins per episode. To be honest when I first heard of this, i thought this is going to be a complete fail so I avoided it. I started to notice more and more reviews and glowing reviews they were, so I decided to give this a shot.

Overall it is ok, its not fantastic but its a very light and entertaining 45mins. Some of the jokes are very funny, and the plot is very basic but good. If your a Joss fan then you will like this, if not I dont think it would click with you.

Katie Melua 2008 Tour : Glasgow 3rd November

4 11 2008

Location : Glasgow – SECC Clyde Auditorium
Date : 3rd November

Last night I attended the SECC to see Katie Melua, this was the second time I have seen Katie live and again at the SECC.

Katie’s support act was Andrea McEwan, a new artist from Dramatico. Andrea’s songs were very good, even though the lyrics were seriously cheesy. I think she will be an artist to watch out for, as I liked her style and she has a fantastic voice.

Then Katie came on and the night officially started, she came on stage on her own with an acoustic guitar. She sang a few songs without any background music, and was amazing…every note was perfect. Then she moved on to just her and the piano, and again flawless, this show how talented she is and also she puts a lot of bigger artists to shame…as they need voice tweaking and backing singers to beef up their voice….plus the amount of instruments she can play.

After she finished on the piano, the band appeared behind a digital wall. Katie performed from 20:30pm till 22:00pm, then came back on to sing till 22:15pm.

Katie’s voice was fantastic and you could hear every word crystal clear, and also hear that her voice has gotten stronger. The digital video boards above the band were a nice touch, and the lighting effects are really nice.

Katie sang her new song plus Toy Collection, which is a very nice little song and featured on her greatest hits album.

Overall a flawless concert, which I enjoyed from start to finish.

V for Vendetta (2005) – Review

2 11 2008

Plot – A shadowy freedom fighter known only as “V” uses terrorist tactics to fight against his totalitarian society. Upon rescuing a girl from the secret police, he also finds his best chance at having an ally.

Review – Another DVD I purchased and only watched once, so it was time to see if I should keep it or remove it from my collection.

Its a hard one to review as at parts it was good, and others very bad. The film overall is very good but at parts lacks a lot, Natalie is very cute as always and still a good actress…even if she is bald in this. The story line is very simple, and the ending is just ok.
