Gamer (2009) – Review

Plot : Set in a future-world where humans can control other humans in mass-scale, multi-player online gaming environments, a star player (Butler) from a game called “Slayers” looks to regain his independence while taking down the game’s mastermind

Review : I went to this film with an open mind, only seeing the trailer and it look interesting.

The film has some really nice ideas, and a lot of cool action scenes. You are instantly interested in the main characters back story, and want to learn more.

Its basically a re-invention of the Running Man, with the look of a First Person shooter game every now and them though this is more serious than the Running Man. Most of the real world parts are lacking something, you don’t get a lot of emotion and get a little bored at parts, though the area this film excels is the parts when he is playing the game its very well done and looks great. Granted the characters don’t really have much to work with, and they do a good job but it just felt that it was lacking something and could have been a hell of a lot better than it was.

The film at parts is very graphic and gorey, espeshailly some of the in game deaths so do expect a lot of blood.

To be honest I cant really say too much without giving a lot of information away.

Overall it is an ok movie nothing special, it was better than I expected but not one I would get on DVD.The best parts of Gamer are the action sequences in and out of the game environments, if there was some more character development and also some longer in game scenes it might have helped. Its a mix between Secondlife meets CounterStrike meets The Running Man.

Night at the Museum (2006) – Review

Plot : A newly recruited night security guard at the Museum of Natural History
discovers that an ancient curse causes the animals and exhibits on
display to come to life and wreak havoc.

Review : I decided to skip this one when it came out at the cinema, as it didnt look to hot. I then spotted it on TV and decided to tape it and watch it at some point when there wasnt much on.

The film is very family oriented which is good, as there are lots of childish jokes plus a good amount of adult humour which really helps. The film is packed with laughs and some make you laugh out loud, though there are a few Ben Stiller moments where you think “your role never changes / your jokes never change” which kinda puts a dampener on some parts as he can be a good actor.

The film has a lot of good well known actors, that you should be able to spot and the special FX are really good.

To my surprise I actually enjoyed the film, but not loads. I know that there is a sequel and I feel like most ok family films the sequel goes down a more kids oriented way and isnt as good.

Overall its easy to watch and has a few good jokes.

District 9 (2009) – Review

Plot : An extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on
Earth suddenly finds a kindred spirit in a government agent that is
exposed to their biotechnology.

Review : Watching the trailer this looks like an interesting film, there has been lots of talk about this film…and I went with an open mind.

After 20mins I was so tempted to just walk out, it was so boring and the plot so far was barley coming through. Its all done via a news report style camera work, which is interesting but after 10mins you are sick of it. I decided to stay just in case it got a lot better…….it didnt.

Still sitting watching the film about a good chunk in, and I was finding myself nearly falling asleep. There was no new ideas, new fresh concepts, and not even a hint of realism to the story. I was really sick of this on-scene news style camera work, and sick of hearing the word “fuck”.

About 90% through and ohhh it picked up….but only just a little…up until this point I would have given it a 1 out of 10 but due to this tiny pickup I bumped that number up to a 2. I lost count with the amount of times they said “fuck”, probably to help bump it to a higher age rating but this amount was just unnecessary as apart from that there wasnt much in it that would call for the 15 rating more a 12.

Overall what a waste of time, I would not recommend this to anyone…well unless you needed some help in getting to sleep.

Transporter 3 (2008) – Review

Plot : Frank Martin puts the driving gloves on to deliver Valentina, the
kidnapped daughter of a Ukranian government official, from Marseilles
to Odessa on the Black Sea. En route, he has to contend with thugs who
want to intercept Valentina’s safe delivery and not let his personal
feelings get in the way of his dangerous objective.

Review : After watching the first and second film, I was glad to hear that there was a third one. I missed seeing this in the cinema, so I decided to rent this via AppleTV.

The first two films I really enjoyed, the action was great, the stunts were excellent and there was always an attractive girl. Granted the storyline is mega basic, but the action and stunts make up for that.

There are a lot of great scenes but one that stuck out for me was the car chase scene, this guy is some driver lol. The plot to introduce an explosive device was interesting, and I think helped keep this film being fun rather than just a carbon copy of the previous two.

This film is just like the previous two films, it has great action, great stunts and an attractive girl….thats really all you can say about these films. I think I have heard that there is a fourth planned, if they keep up the good stunts and action and improve the storyline it could be very good.

Overall if you like action and great stunts this film is for you.

Domino (2005) : Review

Plot : A recounting of Domino Harvey’s life story. The daughter of actor Laurence Harvey turned away from her career as a Ford model to become a bounty hunter

Review : I had heard a lot of mixed reviews about this film, and when I saw it was on TV I decided to watch it and give it a shot.

For me the film was crap, I was bored from start to finish..yes I did continue to watch to the end just in case it did get a little better but nope. There were a lot of good actors in the film, and they didnt really have great parts. The plot was very basic, and could have been a lot better…the whole film could have been a lot better.

The look of the film, and camera work was the only interesting thing for me…

Overall its crap!

The Hangover (2009) : Review

Plot : A Las Vegas-set comedy centered around three groomsmen who lose their about-to-be-wed buddy during their drunken misadventures, then must retrace their steps in order to find him.

Review : I finally got to see this film last week, after hearing so many good things about and how funny it was I was looking forward to it. I am going to keep it short, so I dont spoil the film for anyone who is late in seeing it like I was.

The film is very funny, there are part that you will laugh out loud. It has a lot of silly jokes which work very well with this style of film. The characters are great especially the guy with the beard.

Overall to be honest I didnt think it was THAT good, as everyone said you wouldnt be able to stop laughing…yes it was funny but not laughing every second funny. I would recommend it as i did enjoy the film, and I did have a good laugh just not as much as everyone was saying i would.

I have heard that there is a sequel in the works so I will go see that when it comes out.

Final note….I hope my bachelor party is not this bad lol

The Proposal (2009) – Review

Plot : A pushy boss forces her young assistant to marry her in order to keep
her Visa status in the U.S. and avoid deportation to Canada.

Review : I like watching a wide variety of movies, and yip even a few films that you might class as chick flicks..but I dont mind as its a change from all the violence/action stuff I normally watch.

From watching the trailer, I instantly knew how this movie would end but I thought i would give it a shot.

The film is very enjoyable its got a good cast, and very well written. There are parts where the whole cinema screen were laughing out loud several times, as the dialogue is very witty and funny. Sandra is still very hot and still has a great body for her age…there is definitely one scene most of the guys will enjoy if they go see this film.

Overall its your typical romcom, and you already know how its going to end but its got a lot of really good laughs along the way. If you like romcom/chick flicks then this is for you, an easy to watch and enjoyable movie.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009) – Review

Plot : Armed men hijack a New York City subway train, holding the passengers
hostage in return for a ransom, and turning an ordinary day’s work for
dispatcher Walter Garber into a face-off with the mastermind behind the
crime.

Review :  I went only knowing that this involved a subway train, and its cast so not to expect too much. I knew that it was a remake but thats about it.

I came out of this film thinking that it was ok, and it could have been a lot better. The cast is very good as you have 2 great actors, and their chemistry was good but they are the only reason I think people will go and see this.

All the underground action is lacking and over the top, the use of “fuck” is used a lot and probably too much in every sentence, there is a laptop involved which was just silly. All the above ground action looked very predictable and very structured….also there were crashes just to have some car stunts in the movie.

The dialogue throughout the whole film was very dry, and lacking something…granted there were a few funny lines but nothing to get excited about.

For me the film was just ok, there was a lot of good scenes that just failed to peak…I was always expecting something more. I was a little bored throughout the film, as it could have been a lot better.

Brüno (2009) – Review

Plot : Flamboyant Austrian fashionista Brüno takes his show to America

Review : I had never seen Borat, and only seen a few Ali G shows on TV so I really didnt know what to expect.

This is not the type of film I would normally go and see, or run out and purchase on DVD if I missed it at the cinema.

Bruno is a very interesting film, it has a lot of funny parts which do make you laugh out loud or cring in laughter. The film has a lot of sexual jokes that are very funny, but most of them make you go “oh my god”.

I left the cinema thinking “how did he get away with most of those stunts” and “I am very surprised that they allowed some of that content to be shown”.

To be honest I really dont know what to make of this film, I did laugh a lot and enjoy watching it but its not really my style of film. I dont think this is one where I would go and see it again, or purchase on DVD.

Overall loaded with sexual humour and a a few shock value momments, but not my style of film.
